Kiane Zawadi

Bernard " Bernie " Atwell McKinney, (1932 * November 26 in Detroit ) later called himself Kiane Zawadi is an American jazz trombonist and euphonium player of the hard bop.

Life and work

He was born as one of ten children in a musical family - some of his siblings are musicians (whether brother Harold is a noted pianist in Detroit, his brother bassist Ray ). In his home city of Detroit, it was launched in 1951 to working with Barry Harris and Sonny Stitt and with Art Blakey in 1954. Following year, he took on the originating also from Detroit Donald Byrd, played with bassist Alvin Jackson 1955/56, (brother of Milt Jackson, with whom he played ) in Detroit on weekends at the Bluebird Inn, with Pepper Adams and Yusef Lateef 1957 1958. Lateef went with McKinney in 1959 to New York and worked with Illinois Jacquet in 1959, the octet of Slide Hampton 1959-61, Benny Golson Jazztet 1960 and the Sun Ra Arkestra in 1961. 1962 he played with Freddie Hubbard whose Blue Note disc Ready For Freddie. After working with Hubbard in 1965 he changed his name to " Kiane Zawadi ". Under its new name, he was still playing with his albums Hubbard Blue Spirits, 1966 and High Blues Pressure, 1968. His musical career continued McKinney / Zawadi in Broadway orchestras ( as in 1978 in the revue Dancin ') and several big bands continued, as Frank Foster in 1978, Sun Ra, Clifford Jordan in the early 1990s, Bill Hardman ( Brass Co., 1971 ), Joe Henderson in 1992. During the 1970s he also took with free jazz musicians such as Archie Shepp (Attica Blues, 1972) and McCoy Tyner on and with Abdullah Ibrahim. With his family he took in the 1990s under the band name McKinfolk.

Bernard McKinney's style resembles that of Jay Jay Johnson.
