The Moor Kiehn 1992, was made a nature reserve.

Description

It has a size of 440 hectares, of which 100 ha are located in the district of Celle and 340 ha in the district of Uelzen. The lower nature conservation authorities of these counties are responsible for the area. A large part is wet grassland, which is still partly farmed extensively. Mostly the area is but natural. A small sandy heath is included in the nature reserve. These shares land borders directly on to the bigger moors of the Nature Park South Heath. On these heaths still moorland sheep are kept. North of Kiehn Moores, immediately thereafter, the lowlands of the partially dammed river Gerdau, with the nature reserve Brambosteler Moor. Here is the headwaters of the Gerdau, one of the two sources of Ilmenau. In the southeast, directly adjacent to the shooting range Unterluess the company Rheinmetall and the Large Heath in Unterluess that are closed to the public. In Kiehn Moor is an absolute prohibition order. This whole area is very secluded. On rare birds, the crane and the black stork has settled here. Even the otter can be found here. With the semi-natural forests (partly alder and birch swamp forests ) it is due to the remoteness and the good food and space conditions, a significant habitat for the endangered, very trouble- sensitive black grouse. Along with the neighboring and passing over large parts of areas around the military training grounds Munster and mountains, the Great Moor at Becklingen, the moors at Sittingbourne, the Ostenholzer Moor and the Meißendorfer ponds and Bannetzer Moor, this area of the Lüneburg Heath is home to the largest contiguous Birkhuhnbestand of Central European lowlands.
