Kieler Förde

The Kiel Fjord (Danish: Kiel Fjord and Kiel fjord ) is a 17 km long, narrow fjord on the Baltic Sea, which is caused by glacier movements in the last ice age. It lies between the Danish Wahld landscapes in the west and Wagrien the east and extends from its southern end, the horn next to the city center of Kiel, to the outer fjord, which merges into the Bay of Kiel. At the " Friedrichsort Tight " is the fjord which forms a natural deep water harbor, 1 km wide and was formerly protected by the fortress Friedrichsort.

In Kiel- Neumühlen on the east bank of the river Schwentine empties into the fjord. In Holtenau on the west bank are the sluices of the Kiel Canal (NOK; international designation Kiel Canal until 1948 in Germany Kaiser- Wilhelm-Kanal ). The busiest artificial waterway in the world connects the North Sea ( Elbe estuary ) to the Baltic Sea and saves international shipping to up to about 800 km longer route around the Jutland Peninsula by the Skagerrak and Kattegat. In the year 2012 34.879 ships passed ( 33 522 in 2011) and channel promotion.

On the Kiel Fjord always brisk ship traffic that is caused mainly by the commercial vessels passing down the Kiel Canal, car and passenger ferries to and from Scandinavia, harbor ferries and sail boats that find a high density of moorings in the said promotion places.
