Province

The city of Kilkenny (Irish Cill Chainnigh, which means: Church of the Canisius ) is located in the southeast of the Republic of Ireland on the banks of the River Nore. It is the administrative center of the county of the same name and has 8,651 ( with suburbs 22,179 ) inhabitants ( 2011).

It is famous for its many medieval buildings and its lively nightlife. Known in the world Kilkenny is mainly due to the same beer.

History

St. Canisius (St. Canice ), after whom the city was named, built in the 7th century on the site of the present town St Canice 's Cathedral. In the 12th century a castle was built. 1202 Kilkenny became a bishop.

In 1366, the so-called Kilkenny Statutes were enacted, prohibited the British and Irish, to " mix " to. 1391 acquired the Butler family, the castle, and in the subsequent period saw Kilkenny than English faithful city flourished.

From 1642 to 1648 met the Parliament of the Anglo-Irish Confederacy; thus Kilkenny was the capital of the former Ireland. Attractions

Kilkenny Town has a well-preserved and well-kept medieval town with narrow streets and the striking Castle of Butler, which is also known as Kilkenny Castle. The Norman castle was built in 1391 as a family residence of Ormond, who lived in the castle until 1935. Today's castle dates mainly from the 19th century and opens into a large park inside.

Buildings of Old Town

In the main street of the town is the Rothe House, a renovated merchant house from the 16th century, which offers all the features of the Tudor period.

In the same street is the Town Hall, built in 1761 (The Tholsel ). It is crowned by an octagonal turret.

From there you can down a small alley called Buttery slip, to get Kyteler's Inn, a building from the 14th century, which is supposed to have been the site of action of the witch Alice Kyteler. Today is in the house a pub.

Shee 's Almhouse is a built in the 16th century almshouse, which was later converted to a hospital and now houses the Tourist Office.

  • However, the most impressive church is the Anglican St. Canice 's Cathedral. It is the second largest medieval cathedral in Ireland. The early Gothic Cathedral was built 1202-1285 and consecrated by Bishop Geoffrey St Ledger. In 1332 the bell tower collapsed and had to be rebuilt. The plans, the central tower to make bigger, however, were thereby rejected. Located next to the cathedral round tower dates from the year 849, the choir of St. Canice dates from 1904 and is an exact copy of the choir stalls in the Cathedral of Bruges.   • The St. Mary's Cathedral is the city symbol of Kilkenny, and the city's Roman Catholic Cathedral. The Episcopal Church of the Diocese of Ossory was built 1843-1857 in neo-gothic style.
  • Further noteworthy the Black Abbey from the 13th century with beautiful interior decorations and the ruins of St. Francis Abbey, founded in 1710 on the site of Smithwick 's Brewery.

Environment
