Kim Kwang-kyu

Kim Kwang -kyu ( born January 1, 1941 in Seoul) is a South Korean poet and translator.

Life

Kim Kwang -kyu was born in 1941 in Seoul. He experienced the Korean War, which overshadowed his childhood and youth, and the difficult post-war period. 1960, during his German studies, he participated in the April revolution to resist the dictatorship. From 1972 to 1974 he continued his German studies in Germany. After returning to Korea, he received his doctorate from the Seoul National University with a thesis on Günter Eich. In 1974 he was appointed as a German professor at the University of Busan. Today he teaches at Hanyang University in Seoul.

In addition to his teaching, he made ​​his debut in 1975 as a lyricist. His first poems were published in the prestigious literary magazine " Munhak Kwa JISUNG Sa " (Literature and Spirit). Since his first successful book of poetry from 1979, which has won several awards, published up to 2013 a total of 8 books of poetry. Kim Kwang -kyu is an influential poet of modern Korean literature scene, which is read by a wide audience. He has received numerous literary awards, including the 1981 award for writers of today, 1984, Kim Soo -young- Prize for his poetry collection No, it is not so, and in 2003 the prestigious Daesan Literary Award for his book of poetry of the first fight.

Besides his work as a poet and professor of Germanic Kim Kwang -kyu has also made ​​a name for himself as a translator of German literature. So he translated, inter alia, Poems by Heinrich Heine and Bertolt Brecht as well as poetry and radio plays of Günter Eich into Korean.
