The Kitinen is a river in Finnish Lapland. He is one of the main tributaries of the Kemi and has a length of 278 kilometers, the sixth longest river in Finland. It rises in the watershed on the border of the municipalities of Inari and Sodankylä and flows through the municipality of Sodankylä south. The community center of Sodankylä is located at the mouth of the inflow Jeesiöjoki in the Kitinen. About seven kilometers north of Pelkosenniemi opens the Luiro from the left in the Kitinen. About three kilometers north of Pelkosenniemi opens the Kitinen even in Kemi, the longest river in Finland.

Hydropower plants

On Kitinen there are seven hydroelectric power plants. To regulate the amount of water, 1970, the headwaters of the river was dammed to Porttipahta Reservoir, the 214 square kilometers at maximum water level.
