Kiyomi Kato (wrestler)

Kiyomi Katō (Japanese加藤 喜 代 美, Katō Kiyomi, born March 8, 1948 in Asahikawa, Hokkaido ) is a former Japanese wrestler. He was Olympic champion in 1972 in the free style flyweight.

Career

Kiyomi Katō belonged to the early 1970s to the world's elite freestyle wrestler. He was sponsored by Sanshin Denki ( Sanshin Electronics三 信 电 気, engl. ). The 1.63 meter tall athlete wrestled free style in the flyweight class, 52 kg body weight ranged at that time.

In 1970 he first participated in an international championship. At the Asian Games in Bangkok, he took it behind the Iranian Mohammad Ghorbani the 2nd place.

In 1971, he was also employed at the World Championships in Sofia. After two victories, he was defeated by far the more experienced Baju Baew from Bulgaria and Romania Petre Ciarnau out and landed in the flyweight on the 6th Place.

Kiyomi Katō thus strengthened his training and was at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich in a superior form. In a true triumph he beat eight rivals and was in superior style Olympic champion. In the decisive battle, he also left the Soviet Ringer arsenic Alachwerdijew no chance.

After the Olympic Games in Munich Kiyomi Katō stepped back only 24 years old.
