Klaus Pohl (wrestler)

Klaus -Jürgen Pohl ( born August 1, 1941 in Demmin ) is a former German wrestler.

Life

Klaus Pohl from the Mecklenburg Pomerania began as a teenager with the rings. After the first successes of the talent scouts of the GDR Ringer Association highly rated Ringer was delegated to SG Dynamo Luckenwalde and evolved there with coach Rolf Wilkowski to a class wrestler in Greco- Roman style. One of his first major successes was the 2nd place in the lightweight, Greco-Roman style at the " Werner - soul ties Tournament" in 1962 in Leipzig behind Eckhard Schulz from Rostock and before Stas Penev, Bulgaria. The later world champion Dawid Gwandseladse from the USSR was only 6 winners in this weight class. GDR champion at lightweight, he was first in 1964, when he defeated the favorite Eckhard Schulz. The greatest success Klaus Pohl was winning the European Championship 1966 in Essen. In studying his opponents in international competitions in the following years, it is striking that he had each time taken a very tough draw. For example, he defeated at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City with Vitezlav Macha and Gennadi Sapunov two world champions to fail in the next rounds at two other world champions, Petros Galaktopoulos and Stevan Horvat.

After the 1972 Olympics in Munich, Klaus Pohl ended his career Ringer and was for many years a successful coach at Dynamo Luckenwalde.
