Klenovec

Klenovec ( Klenowetz German, Hungarian Klenóc ) is a large town in central Slovakia.

Geography

The municipality is located in the Veporské Hills, a mountain range of the Slovak Ore Mountains and situated on the River Klenovská Rimava, a tributary of Rimava. Above the village there is a small reservoir ( Vodná nádrž Klenovec ) and by the large land reaches the town to the mountain Klenovský Vepor ( 1338 m nm ), 15 km north- west of the town center. The city Hnúšťa is 6 km to the east, the district Rimavská Sobota is located 30 km to the south, while the regional capital Banská Bystrica is located some 70 km to the west.

History

Klenovec was first mentioned in 1340. The place belonged in the Middle Ages to the estate of Castle Pirsenstein ( Hajnáčka ), after which he belonged from 1591 until the abolition of serfdom in the 19th century Kubinyi family. The municipality is also connects with the Slovak Juraj Jánošík robber leader, as he passed here in spring 1713 with his buddy Tomáš Uhorcik, and was executed on March 18, 1713 in Liptovsky Mikulas.

Until 1918, the county town Gemer and small Hont belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and later became part of the newly formed Czechoslovakia.

Population

The population is Slovak, according to the 2001 census to 93.1 %; and there are also some Roma ( 5.9%). More than half ( 52.9 %) of the population are Protestant, 26.6% next gave their religious affiliation as Catholic, and 15.6% identified themselves as atheists.
