Knardrup Abbey

The monastery Knardrup ( conventus regalis curiae ) is the youngest medieval Cistercian monastery in Denmark and is one of the latest high medieval religious foundations.

Location

The monastery was northwest of Copenhagen between Ganløse and Måløv.

History

The monastery was built shortly before 1326 by King Christopher II on the royal estate Knardrupgaard as a daughter house of the monastery of Soro of filiation of Clairvaux and Esrom Monastery and settled in February 1326 by monks from Soro. The monastery existed until 1536 and was then drafted into the royal demesne and leave the University of Copenhagen. The building materials were used later for the construction of Frederiksborg Castle. The grounds of the convent is built over partially today.
