Knäred

Knäred is a locality ( tätort ) in the Swedish municipality Laholm, which belongs to the province of Halland County. Knäred lies about 20 km east of the main town of the municipality, the small town Laholm, and has approximately 1,100 inhabitants.

In 1854 the church built in the village are the bells and the crucifix of a medieval church that stood on the same site.

The River Lagan has in Knäred several major rapids with hydro power plants that supplied both Southern Sweden and the Danish Zealand electricity in earlier times. With 32 meters of the river downstream from the town rapids Karseforsen has the largest height of fall.

Peace of Knäred

A peace treaty between Denmark and Sweden was signed on 20 January 1613 on the place, which ended the Kalmar War. Sweden had a million rix-dollars - spread over six years - pay in order to keep the fortress Älvsborg can. In the nearby town Sjöared there is a memorial stone to this peace treaty.
