Knights of Peter Claver

The Knights of Peter Claver (abbreviation: CCP, German: Knights of Saint Peter Claver ) are a knightly brotherhood in the Roman Catholic Church. It was founded in 1909 as an African-American and Catholic Brotherhood of Father Conrad Friedrich Rebesher SJ and 6 other founding members in Mobile (Alabama ) (United States ). It operates in the United States and South Africa. The CCP, including the women's organization, is the largest and oldest African-American lay organization.

History

The Polish-born Jesuit Conrad Friedrich Rebesher and the Jesuits Samuel Kelly, Joseph Peter Van Baast, John Henry Dorsey and Gilbert Faustina, Francis Xavier Francis Collins and Trenier founded on November 7, 1909, the first local group within a parish. For namesake they chose to Saint Peter Claver, who had proselytized in the 17th century in Africa. To build their organization they went back to the existing Brotherhood " Knights of Columbus ". In 1922, the Brotherhood joined a women's organization (Ladies Auxiliary ), whose official recognition followed in 1926. Already in 1917 began the construction of a male youth organization with the formal inclusion in 1935 graduated. 1930 a department for young girls was founded. Since 1917 and earned honorable members were received in " sublimed and Meritorious Fourth Degree". A prerequisite for this was a four-year membership and active participation in the fraternity and the community. The honored members will receive the honorary title of " Sir Knight " and " Gracious Lady".

Organization

The main office of the CCP is located in New Orleans. It is headed by the elected President of the "Supreme Knight" and its Bureau. The Brotherhood consists of 298 male and 312 female departments ( divisions ). The youth organization the ages of 7 and 18 years, divided into 123 groups ( Councils ) for the male and 208 for female youth councils. The CCP is an associate member of the International Alliance of Catholic Knights and recognized by the Pontifical Council for the Laity Association of the Faithful
