Köhm

The Köhm between Borschemich and Keyenberg

The Köhm is a small watercourse / drainage ditch in the eastern part of the urban area of Erkelenz. Due to the open pit Garzweiler the Köhm will be gone in a few decades.

Course

The original start of the Köhm was located in the area between Garzweiler and Kaiskorb. Here was at an altitude of 120 m above sea level, the watershed between Erft (Rhein) and Rur / Nier (Maas ). From here the Köhm flowed north past Old Otzenrath. The terrain between Garzweiler and Otzenrath is now in the area abgebaggerten the open cast mine.

From Otzenrath that Köhm runs in east-west direction in a narrow valley at a height 74-78 m above sea level through the village Borschemich, then north of Keyenberg directly to the former manor house Keyenberg over, finally in the Nier to lead.

It is a flowing water only after heavy rains and snow melt. Partial feeds done by drainage measures for the Garzweiler mine. From the entrance Borschemich the Köhm is channeled and flows until after Marienstift street next to the rectory open further. Previously, the grave of the House Paland was fed by the Köhm in Borschemich, part of the trenches is still preserved. In the Köhm formerly flowed well water from the grave of the House Keyenberg, which in turn was fed by springs.

History

The place Borschemich was mentioned as Brismike the first time in 898 in a document. 1396 appears the name as Bursmich, 1618 in Borschemich. The interpretation of the name is not unique to clarify.
