Kōichirō Matsuura

Koichiro Matsuura (Japanese松浦 晃 一郎, Koichiro Matsuura, born September 29, 1937 in Tokyo) is a Japanese diplomat. He was from 1999 to 2009 General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

He studied from 1956 to 1959 Law at the University of Tokyo and 1959-1961 Economics at Haverford College ( Pennsylvania). He is in Japanese Diplomat services since 1959. From 1994 to 1999 he was Japanese Ambassador to France, and (also ) Andorra and Djibouti. From 1998 to 1999 he was chairman of the Committee for the World Heritage (World Heritage Committee).

Since 1990, he has written several works on the subject of diplomacy, environmental protection and policy.
