Komstad

Komstad is a village in the Swedish municipality Sävsjö.

The small village has fewer than 50 inhabitants ( 2005) and is located west of Sävsjö. It is known to the village as it has the character of an open-air museum in many parts. Several historic buildings are owned by the Komstad kvarn Foundation and are used for museum purposes. North of the village is the island Kringlan, which is conducted as Natura 2000 project. The village is crossed by Ljungaån. East of the village is the lake Sävsjön.

History

Already in 1370 the existence of water mills is described for Komstad. In the 17th century four Skvaltmühlen mentioned for Komstad. The water mill now preserved in the village in 1871 and was operated with three water wheels. 1894 was rebuilt and the use of a different drive. In 1981, the mill is a Mühlbetrieb her. Today, the mill can grind grains and serves the rest of the electricity production. In the same year also water-powered frame saw was built. It was conducted according to a recent refurbishment in 1909 to 1946. In 1991 she received a new water wheel and is still functional, and up to nine blades can be operated. From 1734 to 1909 was Komstad seat of the local court. The old courthouse Tingshuset is the oldest building in the village and is now privately owned. 1825 Komstad got on the road to Sävsjö a new courthouse and a detention center. While the new courthouse was later implemented by Vrigstad and there serves as a board, the prison building is still preserved in Komstad. There were also executions. These were made on a gallows hill on the way to Vrigstad.

A factory for the manufacture of millstones was opened in 1907 in the village and worked until 1990. The millstones were cast from magnesite, emery and pebbles. Even today, the production facility is fully available. Opened in 1923 in Komstad a village shop which was operated until 1975 and presents itself unchanged since.

In the course of the use of the local museum was founded in 1989 erected a historical smithy in the village. The located there historical tools come from a forge in Sävsjöbyn. South of Komstad on the road towards Norra Ljunga is a memorial stone for the Swedish painter Pehr Hörberg. In the vicinity of Komstad are also several prehistoric sites and equipment. Thus is located on the road to Sävsjö the fragment of a runestone.
