History

The construction of a hall for the primary purpose of use by the Krefeld Penguins has just been demanded for a long time of hockey fans and leaders of the association. Originally from the 1930 Rhineland Hall, the former home of the Penguins no longer met the requirements of a modern ice rink. The plan of the city of Krefeld to build a multi-purpose arena, burned in their population a discussion about the purpose arena in the face of multiple event arenas in the environment, such as the Philips hall Dusseldorf, the Ice Sports Centre Grefrath or the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, as well as the difficult budgetary situation the city. Another point of discussion was the site of the new arena. For discussion were, first, a location in the immediate vicinity of the two existing Krefeld ice rinks at the West Park Street and on the other the construction on a brownfield site at the rear exit of the Krefeld main station in the southern city. On 1 February 2001, finally, the city council to build a new multi-purpose arena on the West Park Road chose. According to the relevant calls Hochtief Construction AG was commissioned to design and construction of the hall. As an architect, office Rhode, Kellermann, Wawrowsky from Dusseldorf worked.

In February 2003, the Duisburg King Brewery secured with about 5 million euros name-and licensed premises for the hall. Finally, in June 2003, it came to the conclusion of a lease agreement between the Krefeld Bau GmbH as an investor and developer as well as the Seidenweberhaus GmbH as the operator of the hall. August 27, 2003 the ground was broken on May 7, 2004, the topping was celebrated. On 4 December 2004, the arena was finally opened with a concert by Sarah Connor. The first DEL Game was played on December 17, 2004 with the Krefeld Penguins meeting held against the Polar Bears Berlin before more than 7,500 spectators.

Architecture

When planning special attention was paid to import the cauldron effect from the Rhineland hall. The built-in as cast glass facade elements can be illuminated differently depending on the event. For concerts, etc. the ice is covered with insulating floor slabs.
