Koroit opal field

Koroit is the name of an opal field in Queensland, which is about 85 kilometers from Cunnamulla.

Koroit opals were discovered in 1897 off of Yowah and a small company began with a search for opals. This company came in, but it was taken over by the Scottish And Australian Opal Mines. This company began mining in May 1903. 150 manholes and 460 meters of tunnels were dug and matrix and Boulderopale found. However, at this time fell Opalpreise because there was a glut of opals from White Cliffs, and the attack was set.

1907 round-shaped 15 cm large opal was found by a single worker in this Opalgebiet, one of the largest opals ever found. Therefore he was named Great Australian.

In 1925 there were several attempts to find again opals, they remained without success. In the 1970s, when the Opalpreise increased, the opal field of Koroit developed a new bloom. Koroit opals are enjoying today again in great demand.
