Kostanjevica na Krki

Kostanjevica na Krki (German: Country road on the Gurk ) is the oldest and the smallest town of Lower Carniola in Slovenia. The oldest part of the village is located on an artificial island in the river Krka. The German names for this place are the more common secondary road and also the older Landestrost.

Kostanjevica na Krki is also the name of the whole church, consisting of 28 villages. The municipality has 2,480 inhabitants, of which the main town Kostanjevica na Krki 751 people.

History

The settlement founded by the clamping Heimern emerged in the early 13th century. Around 1210 it was first mentioned city, in 1249, their market law was put on record. To 1234, Duke Bernhard of Spanheim the Cistercian monastery of Mary Fons Beatae. The monastery Kostanjevica was a daughter house of pen Viktring at Klagenfurt in Carinthia. By the end of the Habsburg Empire Kostanjevica na Krki belonged to the crown land of Carniola, where Kostanjevica formed its own community. Kostanjevica was also the seat of the judicial district secondary road, which in turn was part of the district Gurkfeld.

Because of the insular nature of the city at the foot of Gorjanci is frequently flooded, which is why it has obtained the nickname Venice of Lower Carniola ( Dolenjske Benetke ).

In 2002, the city celebrated the 750th anniversary of the first mention.

Attractions

  • Kostanjevica Jama: The caves were discovered in 1937 after the entrance had been cleared by a flood. In total, over 1800 m of the cave system are already explored, with many of the tunnels are flooded. Since 1971, the cave is accessible to the public. For tourists, an approximately 210 m long road was built, the remaining parts are approved for experienced cavers.
  • Kostanjevica monastery ( Fons Beatae Mariae, Mariabrunn ): contains today a modern art gallery.
