Kostas Giannidis

Giannis Konstantinidis (Greek Γιάννης Κωνσταντινίδης, as Yiannis and Iannis Constantinidis and transcribed; born August 21, 1903 in Smyrna (now Izmir), † January 17, 1984 in Athens ) was a Greek composer of classical music, a pianist and conductor, who the pseudonym Kostas Giannidis ( gr Κώστας Γιαννίδης ) also a successful composer of popular songs was Greek.

Life

Konstantinidis came as the son of a wealthy upper class family in Smyrna to the world that originally came from Zagora on the Pelion. He grew up in the liberal climate of the city, which at that time had 40 theaters where operas and operettas were given. First lessons in harmony, he received as a child of Dimosthenis Milanakis. It was also the folk music of the workers from the suburbs of Smyrna and the formative of the peasant population from the surrounding rural areas of the city for him. In April 1922, shortly before the reconquest of Smyrna by the Turks in the Greek -Turkish War Konstantinidis left his hometown and went to first to Dresden, in January 1923, finally to Berlin, where he remained until 1930. Here he studied with Paul Juon composition ( 1923-24 ), piano with Karl Rössler, conducting with Carl Ehrenberg and orchestration with Kurt Weill. In Berlin, he met the pupil of Schoenberg Nikos Skalkottas, with whom he became friends. Since his family could no longer support him financially after the destruction of Smyrna, he worked as a pianist in cabaret and film screenings as well as in radio and thus for the most important new media of the Roaring Twenties. In the 1960s, he was successful in a few hits competitions. As Giannidis Konstantinidis created over 50 works for the stage, seven film scores and many individual songs and pop.
