Kostas Politis

Konstantinos Politis (Greek Κωνσταντίνος Πολίτης, born March 21, 1942 in Greece ) is a retired Greek professional basketball player and coach.

Career

Playing career

Konstantinos Politis, who played on the position of the Guard was during his playing career for the team of Panathinaikos Athens active, with whom he won three Greek Championships.

With the Greek national Politis graduated 41 matches in which he was able to achieve 131 points (3.2 average ). He made his debut on April 29, 1961 during the European Championships in Yugoslavia in an encounter against the hosts. With Greece, he participated in three European Championships (1961, 1965, 1967) in part. His last international match was Politis on September 17, 1968 at 102-91 victory of Greece over the Philippines.

Coaching career

After his playing career Politis took over as coach at his former club Panathinaikos and was between 1979 and 1982 three championships and two cup wins win. With PAOK Thessaloniki he reached in 1989 and 1990 also the Greek Cup final, both times was defeated by the City and arch-rivals Aris Thessaloniki, however. In 1991 he succeeded though to lead into the final for the third year in a row PAOK, however he had to once more give, beaten this time against Panionios Athens. After his return to Panathinaikos he led the team to the 1994 Final Four tournament for the European Champions Cup, reached there, however, only third place. In 1999 he reached with AEK Athens again the Greek Cup final and left repeatedly as an underdog the pitch. Opponent was calculated PAOK, with whom he had failed three times. Side Panathinaikos, PAOK and AEK Athens Politis also coached the club Niar Is.

As coach of the Greek national Politis participated in two European Championships ( 1983, 1987 ) and a World Championship (1986 ) part. His greatest achievement was the gold medal at the European Championships in 1987, he could win in front of his home crowd. For Greece, which went into the tournament as underdogs, this should be the foundation for the following successes.
