Kotoōshū Katsunori

Kotooshu Katsunori (琴 欧洲 胜 纪Japanese, actually Bulgarian Калоян Стефанов Махлянов / Kaloyan Stefanov Machljanow; born February 19, 1983 in Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria ) is a former sumo wrestler.

Kotooshu began his Sumōlaufbahn in 2002, reached in only nine tournaments juryo Division and rose to September 2004 in the Makuuchi division. In March of the following year he was promoted to komusubi. Then broke his winning streak and he had to go to a 4-11 Make- koshi withdraw back into the maegashira ranks. However, he was able to collect again and fought from September 2005 as sekiwake. After the November 2005 tournament he was appointed ozeki. The required for this number of 19 tournaments since the start in the lowest league, the Jonokuchi, is the fastest ever ascent of a Sumotori.

Kotoōshūs body length is 2.03 m. He is on the one hand as large as the former yokozuna Akebono, but it brings with " only" about 160 kg below average for a sumo wrestler his size weight on the scale. In battle, he relies mainly on throwing techniques ( nage ), where he is by his long arms an advantage.

Kotooshu was the only wrestler who was able to defeat the then dominant yokozuna Asashoryu in its most successful year in 2005 twice. However, in September 2005 tournament, he lost the tournament to him, although he had been lying to last par. In November of that year he returned the favor by teaching the yokozuna his only defeat. After this tournament, he was promoted to ozeki. He was thus the first Europeans and the fifth foreigner to have managed this.

As Ozeki Kotooshu was not convincing throughout. He has not completed its five tournaments with a negative balance of victories; Moreover, a two-digit balance is expected of a rikishi of his rank. After all, he won in May 2008 when Natsu- basho with a record of 14-1 a tournament victory in the Makuuchi division. This Kotooshu is the first European who won a basho for themselves.

In September 2006, he changed with the same pronunciation of his Shikona琴 欧 州in琴 欧洲.

After two weak tournaments Kotooshu was downgraded at Hatsu Basho 2014 in the rank of sekiwake. With a winning record of 10-5 at least he could have returned to take his old rank of ozeki, but this Final he could not reach, despite a kachi- KOSHIS. The Spring Tournament 2014 started for Kotooshu again with a series of defeats. On March 20, he finally announced his resignation at a press conference. It is expected he will remain with the sumo world as Kotooshu - Oyakata.
