Krasnoslobodsk, Republic of Mordovia

Krasnoslobodsk (Russian Краснослободск, moksch. Ош, Osh ) is a city in the Republic of Mordovia (Russia) with 10,151 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located about 110 km west of the Republic capital Saransk at the Moksha, a right tributary of the opening into the Volga Oka.

Krasnoslobodsk is the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons.

History

The place is known since 1571 as belonging to a Ostrog Krasnaya Sloboda settlement, which received city status in 1780 under the present name.
