Insar, Insarsky District, Republic of Mordovia

Insar (Russian Инсар, moksch. Инсара, Insara ) is a small town in the Republic of Mordovia (Russia) with 8687 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located about 70 km southwest of the Republic capital Saransk at the mouth of Insarka in the Issa in the river system of the Volga.

Insar is the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons.

History

Insar was first mentioned in 1648 as a "fortress" with associated settlement documented and received city rights in 1780. 1926 lost the place a city charter in 1958 but it has been awarded again.
