Kristian Osvald Viderø

Kristian Osvald VIDERO ( born May 27, 1906 in Skálavík, Faroe Islands, † April 8, 1991 in Copenhagen ) was a Faroese poet, Vicar and Bible translator.

Kristian Osvald comes as his contemporary Hedin Brú from the village Skálavík on Sandoy. Like him, he first went to sea as a fisherman. At the University of Copenhagen, he studied theology until 1941. After the death of Provost Jacob Dahl 1944, he took over his translation of the Old Testament in the Faroese language, which was published in 1961 and since then the official version of the Lutheran state church on the North Atlantic archipelago.

In the period 1947-1952 was VIDERO pastor in the community Nordstreymoy at the church in Hvalvík. 1953-1965 he was a pastor in the church Südstreymoy - and a short time - from 1965 to 1968, he served as a priest in the Eastern Township Viðareiði on the Norðoyar. From 1968 until his retirement in 1977 was VIDERO pastor in the northern community on Suðuroy headquartered at the vicarage in Hvalba.

As a retiree Kristian Osvald VIDERO pilgrimage to the holy places in the Middle East and India. His travelogue from Jerusalem is regarded as his first literary work. This was followed by a cultural-historical description of the Faroese village life and his memoirs Á Annað Suðurlandið in verse. He never returned to the Faroe Islands and died in 1991 aged 84 in Copenhagen.
