Kriton Arsenis

Crito Arsenis (Greek Κρίτων Αρσένης; born August 3, 1977 in Thessaloniki, Greece) is a Greek politician ( Panellinio Sosialistiko Kinima ). Since the European elections of 2009, he is member of the European Parliament.

Early life

From 1996 to 2001 Arsenis studied spatial planning and regional planning at the University of Thessaly. From 2001 to 2003, he completed a postgraduate course in International Development ( MPA / ID) at the Harvard Kennedy School.

Arsenis worked from 2005 to 2009 for the Greek NGO Elliniki Etaireia ( Hellenic Society for the Protection of the Environment and the Cultural Heritage ), where he, for the establishment of the "Sustainable Aegean Programme", an awareness campaign for the sustainable development of the Aegean Islands was responsible.

From January 2008 to May 2009 he served as a member of the Greek National Planning Council, in which he represented ten Greek environmental organizations.

Political career

In June 2009, Crito Arsenis became a member of the European Parliament in the S & D. After he received the Grand Prize for the campaign "Sustainable Aegean", he was recruited by Giorgos Papandreou, the former prime minister of Greece, PASOK.

In the European Parliament is Arsenis member of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety and the Committee on Fisheries, and substitute member of the Committee on Development. He is also in the delegation for relations with the Maghreb countries and the Arab Maghreb Union and the Delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean

He is active in issues of biodiversity and the fight against climate change and was instrumental in the recent EU regulation on illegal timber. In addition, he fights to save the bluefin tuna in the Mediterranean.

Activities and Awards

Since the age of 15 years Arsenis was an active member of the environmental movement in Greece and abroad.

In 1998, he was honored by the prefecture of Thessaloniki with an award for his contribution to the protection of the Old Town ( Ano Poli ) of Thessaloniki.

In 2009 he was awarded by the European Union and Europa Nostra for the campaign "Sustainable Aegean" in the category " Education, training and awareness" with the grand prize.

As part of the effort to raise awareness for climate change coordinated Arsenis two Greek " Turn the lights off " initiatives, for 5 minutes in February 2007 and for 10 minutes in June 2007.

In September 2010 he became the " MEP of the Year 2010" in the category fishery, an award that is awarded by The Parliament Magazine.
