Krzysztof Michalski

Krzysztof Michalski ( born June 8, 1948 in Warsaw, † February 11, 2013 in Vienna) was a Polish philosopher and rector of the company founded in 1982 by his Institute for Human Sciences ( IWM ) in Vienna.

Life

Krzysztof Michalski graduated in philosophy in 1974 at the University of Warsaw from the dissertation Heidegger and contemporary philosophy. In 1977 he spent a year as a Humboldt Fellow in Cologne, in 1978, he taught philosophy at the University of Warsaw. 1981/82 he received a scholarship from the Thyssen Foundation in Heidelberg and 1982/83 Fellow of Churchill College, Cambridge. In 1986 he completed his habilitation at the University of Warsaw with the work logic and time. Attempt a phenomenological analysis. From 1987 he taught philosophy at Boston University, since 1994 also at the University of Warsaw.

In 1982 he founded in Vienna, the Institute for Human Sciences ( IWM ), which he was Rector until his death. The Institute is an independent Institute for Advanced Study in the field of humanities and social sciences. Since its inception, it promotes intellectual exchange between East and West, between science and society and between a variety of disciplines and schools of thought.

Ahead of the EU enlargement Michalski, the European Commission discussed on several occasions, most recently as Chairman of the Reflection Group The Spiritual and Cultural Dimension of Europe ( 2002-04 ). He was chairman of the Institute for Public Affairs in Warsaw, as well as President of the Network of European Institutes for Advanced Study ( NetIAS ).
