Kukës County

The Qark Kukes (Albanian Qarku i Kukësit ) is one of twelve Qarks in Albania. It is located in north-eastern Albania and has an area of ​​2374 km ². The capital is Kukes.

Geography

The Qark Kukes consists of the three districts Has, Kukes and Tropoja with Kukes as economic and administrative center. In the east and north borders of Qark Kukes to Kosovo, where the region was also aligned in historic times. On the north-west there is a short piece of common border with Montenegro to the southeast and the mountains of Korab a short piece border with Macedonia. The landscape is very mountainous and is dominated by the Drin River, which is dammed partly artificial and forms in the southwest for a few kilometers to the border Qark Shkodra. In the south, there is a short border with the Qarks Lezha and Dibra.

The National Park Valbonatal in the Albanian Alps outermost in the Northwest is one of the most famous national parks in Albania.

Population

The Qark has 85 292 inhabitants ( 2011). 2001, there had still been about 112,000 inhabitants. The Qark has thus lost in the last ten years, almost a quarter of the population. Stark deposited in the mountains, he was for a long time only very poorly developed and one of the poorest areas of the country, which is why about a quarter of the population has emigrated of Qarks already between 1989 and 2001.

Politics and Administration
