Kurier

The Courier is an Austrian daily newspaper with a national orientation.

History

Foundation

In occupied post-war Austria, the Allies had Austrian media landscape firmly in hand. The first published on August 27, 1945 Wiener Kurier was founded by the U.S. occupying power (see also: Army Group Press ). The newspaper was opened unusually innovative and colorful, and is therefore considered as the first tabloid Austria. She appeared with an initial print run of 153,200 pieces and could be with her American editor in chief, the press officer Colonel Albert W. Reid, establish the same in the initial phase. As a battering ram on the front line against the Soviets, who tried in turn to denounce the Americans in their leaves, the purpose of the Wiener Kurier was then principally to transport American propaganda messages.

Rise

In early 1946, the Wiener Kurier with an average circulation of 300,000 copies per day, the most widely read newspaper in the country. On 1 October of the same year, the newspaper posted a record circulation of 445,000 copies, because they reported expertly lurid and bar letters above the judgments at the Nuremberg trials. As the Wiener Kurier on September 26, 1947 could not appear again, hundreds of readers shared their regret with phone, including the Chancellor, the Minister of the Interior, the Minister of Trade and Vienna's police chief. The reason for the failure to appear was a very simple: the supply of paper had not passed.

Despite the on October 1, 1945, officially proclaimed by the Allied Council decree on the restoration of a free press in Austria, not much changed in the political influence by the occupying powers. Although the strict censorship was largely overridden, but this changed nothing about the fact that the Allies continued to intervene in their favor. The paper bottleneck, which, for example, the Viennese newspaper Die Presse was then delivered, did not affect the Wiener Kurier. He could even afford thanks to American help, to create a separate paper stock, while other newspapers had to contend with great difficulties.

Crisis

But the paper bottleneck in the summer of 1946, survived even the Wiener Kurier not without consequences: In the midst of a rapidly growing circulation had the U.S. newspaper in both the circulation and the extent of the sheet to accept losses: The leaf fell from 300,000 copies per day to just more around 130,000 copies a day in June 1950, while the price of newsprint 1946-1951 almost quintupled. The dominant market position of the Wiener Kurier contrast, rose from successively, also popular with the public showed strong losses.

With the establishment of the tabloid Bild - telegraph of three Austrian media creators the courier 's survival was made even more difficult. He now had a direct competitor.

Preparations were made to adjust the Wiener Kurier, the newspaper stagnated at a circulation of 60,000 copies. The not yet in the newspaper business represented Ludwig upholsterers, operator of the film company Cosmopol, filed for interest in the Wiener Kurier. It was only through the mediation of the Director of the Theater in der Josefstadt, Ernst Haeusserman, one could dissuade the Americans of their plan to set the paper completely. Another prospective beside Ludwig upholsterers notified to the publisher of the popular Viennese weekly edition, Franz Carmel, and Fritz Molden, leader of the liberal press, who later became a bitter opponent of upholsterer was.
