Kwak Jae -gu (born 1954 in Gwangju ) is a South Korean poet.

Life

Kwak Jae -gu was born in Gwangju in 1954. He graduated from the University of Chonnam. After his poem at the station Sapyŏng ( 사평역 에서 ) 1981 a literary contest won, which was sponsored by the JoongAng Ilbo, Kwak began to become active in the literary circle, May Poetry ( 오월 시 ) produced the magazine.

Kwak Jae- gus lyrical legacy comes primarily from its representation of love and loneliness, which clearly follows Korean aesthetics. The development, which may be considered one between his first collection of poems on Sapyŏng station ( 사평역 에서 ) and its third anthology Korean Lovers ( 한국 의 연인들 ) clearly shows a shift from an abstract devotion to historical and social problems toward a relationship with social reality which is viewed through the prism of an abstract love. This lyrical evolution may also be regarded as an ever-deepening search for the real meaning of one's self.

Starting with its fourth anthology Senoya Seoul ( 서울 세노야 ) to Kwaks poems went on the search for a concrete realization of love and spiritual rebirth. Kwaks early works are full of anger at the monstrous violence of society and full of love for the common people who are suffering under the burden of this violence. The emotions on the front of his poetry - sadness, loneliness, anger, despair, longing, love - demonstrate the extent of his anger and frustration over the prevailing socio- historical dilemma facing the author is. While these emotions in the first anthology expressed vague and abstract, they stand out more and be expressed with each band clearer and clearer. The poems in Seoul Senoya reveal an obtrusive awareness of history and the social situation, as well as a description of the human condition, specifically as well as lyrically. These poems exceed the basic emotions of anger and suffering in light of the violence that prevails in the world and try to restore the purity and love that make up the very nature of humanity.
