Kymi Province

The Kymi Province (Finnish Kymen lääni, swedish Kymmene län) is a former province in Finland. It consisted 1945-1997 and included the present-day landscapes Kymenlaakso and South Karelia. The Kymi province takes its name from the River Kymi. The capital of the province was Kouvola.

After Finland in 1944 after the Continuation War, ceded the eastern part of Karelia to the Soviet Union, the province of Kymi was established from the left on the Finnish side of the province of Viipuri a year later. 1949, struck the province of Kymi in addition to the previously belonging to the province of Uusimaa communities Anjala, Elimäki, Iitti, Jaalah and Kuusankoski. Through the provincial reform of 1997, the province of Kymi was merged together with the province of Uusimaa, the southern part of the province of Häme and a small part of the province of Southern Finland Mikkeli for the new province.
