La Clusaz

La Clusaz is a commune in the French department of Haute- Savoie department in the Rhône-Alpes region.

Geography

La Clusaz is at 1039 m above sea level. M., east of Thones, about 23 km east of the town of Annecy (air line). The holiday and winter covers in the basin of the Nom, at the junction of two valleys in the Alps on the northwest foot - Bornes the Chaîne des Aravis.

History

The place name is derived from the word La Clusaz cluse ( gorge ), the gorge of the Nom is meant below the village. The area around La Clusaz and belonged to the Abbey of Talloires. The Latinized name Clusa Locus Dei appears in the documents from which the French name La cluse -Lieu -Dieu developed, which was in use until 1772 in the 13th century.

With the opening of the road from La Clusaz Thones via the Col des Aravis after Flumet in the valley of Arly transformed La Clusaz from the remote mountain village to a holiday resort. Since about 1910 here is downhill. The actual development of the winter, however, a continued until the early 1960s.

Attractions

With 1845 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) La Clusaz is one of the medium-sized towns in the Haute-Savoie region. Since the early 1970s, a substantial population increase was recorded.

Economy and infrastructure

La Clusaz was up to the beginning of the 20th century, mainly stamped by agriculture and Alpine village. Today there are various operations of small businesses. Most working in the village workers find their income but in the tourism industry. In recent decades, La Clusaz has developed into an important tourist resort. The community is mainly focused on winter tourism. Numerous cable cars and ski lifts connect the slopes and peaks of the Aravis chain and the Pointe de Beauregard, which provide ski runs of all difficulty levels. The place is a good infrastructure. Access is either from Annecy via Thones through the valley of Fier or by Bonneville through the valley of the Borne. Further road links exist on the Col des Aravis with Flumet or over the Col de la Croix Fry with Manigod.
