Cordon (Haute-Savoie)

Cordon is a commune in the French department of Haute- Savoie department in the Rhône-Alpes region.

Geography

Cordon is on 871 m above sea level. M., above Sallanches, about 50 km southeast of the city of Geneva (air line). The village stretches a scenic location with views of Mont Blanc on the western slope of the Arvetals, approximately 300 m above the valley basin of Sallanches, in the Savoy Alps at the eastern foot of the Chaîne des Aravis, in the southeastern Faucigny.

The area of ​​22.35 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the upper Arvetals. The area is bounded on the north by the valley of the mountain stream Sallanches, in the south of that of the Torrent de la Croix. It extends from the slope terrace at Cordon west on the ridge of the Croix de la Tete and Croix du Planet (1826 m above sea level. M. ). This is followed by further west the Croisse Baulet ( 2236 m above sea level. M. ) on. A small tip goes over the mountain pass Col de Niard in the headwaters of the Arrondine and up to the Tête Pelouse, a summit of the Chaîne des Aravis, on with 2539 m above sea level. History

In the municipality of Cordon traces of settlement have been discovered by the Allobrogians. First mentioned is the place in the 15th century.

Attractions

Worth seeing is the village church of Notre -Dame-de Assumption, built in 1781-1787 in Baroque style. It has a rich interior, including a baroque altar from the 18th century. The Chapel of Our Lady dates from the time around 1700. Different characteristic in the ancient village houses in the Savoyard style have been preserved.

Population

With 1006 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Cordon is one of the small towns in the Haute-Savoie region. Since the early 1960s, a substantial population increase was recorded thanks to the attractive residential area. Outside the village a number of single-family homes were built.

Economy and infrastructure

Cordon was until well into the 20th century a predominantly coined by farming village. Today there are various operations of small businesses. Many workers are commuters who engage in the larger towns in the area, especially in Sallanches and Cluses, their work. In recent decades, Cordon has developed into a holiday resort. The community is specialized in both the summer tourism as well as on winter tourism ( several mountain railways and ski lifts).

The place is a good infrastructure. The main access is from Sallanches; another road connection with Combloux. The nearest links to the A40 motorway is located at a distance of about 6 km.
