La Seu d'Urgell

La Seu d' Urgell [ lə sɛw ðuɾʒeʎ ] is a city in northern Catalonia. The city is located in the Pyrenees mountains near the sovereign principality of Andorra. It is the capital of the Catalan comarca of Alt Urgell, in the province of Lleida. The city is located 691 m above sea level, is 15.44 square kilometers and counts 12,468 inhabitants (1 January 2013). Through the city flows the Segre, in coming to the urban area of ​​the Valira, from Andorra, opens.

History

The city was founded in 195 BC as Orgellia by the Romans. Little is known about the Christianization of the region, but there were already 527 a bishop. In the Middle Ages La Seu d' Urgell was the capital of the historic county of Urgell. The name suffix Seu means in Catalan bishop's seat.
