Lac du Chambon

The Chambon Dam ( Barrage du Chambon French ) jams on the river Romanche the Lac du Chambon at Le Chambon in the French department of Isère in the Rhone- Alpes. The built 1929-1934 dam was until the completion of Hoover Dam in 1936, the highest dam in the world and 16 years, still the highest in Europe until 1950, the Santa Giustina Dam was built.

The purpose of the Aufstaus was to operate a hydroelectric power plant. The reservoir is 140 acres in size and holds 54 million cubic meters. On 24 April 1935, the impounding began. The villages of Le Chambon, Le Dauphin and Le Parizet disappeared under the water.

The owner and operator today was Electricité de France, the construction took over Campenon Bernard.

There are two other reservoirs with the name " Chambon " in France, namely in the departments of Puy -de- Dôme, and Creuse.
