Features

Butterfly

The wingspan of the butterfly is 36 to 41 millimeters. The forewings vary in several color shades and contain red-brown, purple -brown, silver-gray and dark brown shades. Kidney and ring stain are large and partly reddish tinted. The Basalstrich is very dark and conspicuous. Midfield and extreme fringe region also stand out dark, while the inner Saumfeld is gray brown to silver gray. This characteristic led to the German name gray field Kräutereule and distinguishes it from other species. In the bright wavy line a large, reaching to the outer edge of W - character is recognized, which served as the basis for the Latin name w - latinum. The hind wings are gray-brown without markings, outwardly somewhat obscured, only the dark veins become more distinct.

Egg, caterpillar, pupa

The flat, hemispherical egg has little prominent, wavy ribs. It is first yellowish green, later whitish or gray with crimson spots at the top. The color of the beads varies from greenish or yellowish to brownish gray. You have an indistinct dark dorsal line, also with dark slashes. They also show bright side stripes and black legs and spiracles. The head has two distinctive vertical black stripes. The dark red-brown doll has a small, paddle-shaped, constricted at the base of cremaster with two peaks.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The species is in Europe with an expansion to Central Asia ( Turkmenistan) and Asia Minor Widely used, in the mountains it rises to a height of about 1600 meters. Main habitat is warm slopes. Mixed forests, bushy heaths and parklands.

Way of life

The moths are mostly nocturnal, occasionally suck on the flowers of barberry (Berberis vulgaris), appear to artificial light sources and, occasionally, the baits. The caterpillars live from July to September. They feed on the leaves of various plants, such as blueberries (Vaccinium myrtillus), blackthorn (Prunus spinosa), various kinds of broom ( Genista, Sarothamnus ), silver birch (Betula pendula) and others. The species overwinters as a pupa.

Endangering

The gray field Kräutereule is widely used in Germany and area- wise proliferates, so that it is considered not at risk.

The genus is Lacanobia of hacker et al. (2002) divided into three subgenera. Lacanobia w - latinum is provided Nominatuntergattung Lacanobia.
