Lady Janet Stewart

Lady Jane Stewart, called La Belle Ecossaise (* 1520 in Scotland, † 1563 in Paris) was governess of Mary Queen of Scots, and mistress of the French King Henry II

Life

Jane Stewart was an illegitimate daughter of the Scottish King James IV Stuart and his mistress Agnes Stewart, daughter of Sir James Stewart, 1st Earl of Buchan. She married in 1537 Sir Malcolm Fleming, 3rd Lord Fleming ( Fleming House ), he fell at the Battle of Pinkie Cleugh on September 10, 1547 From this marriage she had two daughters.:

  • Margaret ( * before 1542-1584 )
  • Mary ( * 1542) ∞ William Maitland

Lady Jane was appointed by the Queen Mother Marie de Lorraine - Guise for the little governess Mary Queen of Scots and her peers daughter Mary. 1548 she accompanied the young queen to France and moved the favor of the then French king himself. Due to the affair with Henry II, she brought forth a son:

  • Henri de Valois, Chevalier d' Angoulême and later governor of Provence ( 1551-1586 ).
