Lagrein

Lagrein is a red grape variety that originates from South Tyrol and is cultivated there ( autochthonous ). Rosé and red wines are vinified from her: The rose wines Lagrein Kretzer or Lagrein Rosato hot, the red hot Lagrein Lagrein scuro or, more recently, even more simply Lagrein.

Descent

Lagrein is related to the varieties Teroldego and Marzemino according to genetic studies of José Vouillamoz in northern Italy. There is also a relationship to the Syrah and therefore also to Dureza and Mondeuse Blanche. A study published in 2010, the study indicates a parent varieties Lagrein and Teroldego Edelvernatsch (Italian Schiava Gentile ).

History

Until the 18th century the White Lagrein was with " Lagrein " usually meant that probably was the most important South Tyrolean varieties since the Middle Ages to modern times. For the first time witnessed the " bonum Lagrinum " ( good Lagreinwein ) in a Traminer deed of 1379, while Bolzano sources from 1420 to lägrein wine of 1498 and call the white grades Lagrein explicitly. The Red Lagrein is also mentioned in the national order of Michael Gaismair 1525:

" [ ... ] And the barren weingarten whether to make glazes, red lagrein darynnen create and verjhieren wine making as in wälschland [ ... ] "

Only since the 20th century under the red variety Lagrein generally understood.

Documents

Particularly well known are the documents to the district of Bolzano Gries which are heavily faded in the last 100 years due to the expansion of the city. In recent years, the layers in the eastern valley of Bolzano ( Bozen floor and Rentsch ) and Auer are noticed with extremely good Lagrein. Since the 1990s, there is the Lagrein Lagrein mainly as dark and as Riserva (two years storage at most twelve months aging in barrique oak barrels ). The variety has been grown in South Tyrol in 2009 of 877 farms on 416 ha, 25,000 hectoliters of wine were as red wine and 3,200 hl cellared as Rosé ( Kretzer ).

Lagrein Trentino comes in larger bottles figures on the market. In Australia, a first crushing was carried out in 1991. A group of about 15 Australian companies marketed since about 2000 pure varietal wines. In America, there are a few crops (California, Oregon); The wines are usually but not marketed varietal wine. Experimental cultivation is also known from the Mosel ( Osann- Monzel ). In a vineyard in the Pfalz ha is cultivated since 2003 Lagrein to about 0.5.

Synonyms

The Lagrein grape is also known under the name Blue Lagrain, Burgundi Lagrein, Lagrain, Lagrino and Lagroin.
