Lajos Asztalos

Lajos Asztalos [ lɒjoʃ ɒstɒloʃ ] ( born July 29, 1889 in Pecs, † November 1, 1956 in Budapest) was a Hungarian chess player and chess writer.

Chess career

In the Hungarian Championships Asztalos occupied in August 1912 in Temesvár second place behind Breyer. In 1913, he was then in Debrecen Hungarian champion. After the First World War he lived until 1942 in Yugoslavia and represented this country at the Chess Olympiads in 1927 in London and 1931 in Prague. He also played in 1936 at the unofficial Chess Olympiad in Munich.

In 1942 he moved to Budapest. 1950 FIDE awarded him the title of International Master.

Functionary

From 1951 to his death he represented the Hungarian Chess Federation to FIDE. He was also the FIDE International Judge and Chairman of the Qualification Commission.

Private

Asztalos studied in Budapest philosophy and a doctorate in this subject. As a professor, he then worked at the University of Budapest. After moving to Yugoslavia, he taught in Sarajevo, Mostar and Zagreb in secondary schools Latin and Greek. He spoke eight languages ​​fluently, Hungarian.

Asztalos died in 1956 in a gas poisoning.
