Lajos Haynald

Lajos Haynald ( German Stephan Franz Ludwig von Haynald; born October 3, 1816 in Szécsény in Nógrád, Hungary, † July 4, 1891 in Kalocsa ) was Archbishop and botanist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Haynald ".

Life and work

Haynald studied in Gran, Trnava and Vienna, where he received his doctorate in theology in 1841. From 1842 to 1846 he was professor of theology at Gran, engaged in lively with natural science, especially botany, in 1851 coadjutor of the bishop in Karl Castle and in 1852 the bishop there, before he was appointed Titular Bishop of Hebron.

In 1863 he renounced his bishopric and lived in Rome until he returned in 1867 as archbishop of Kalocsa in Hungary. In the consistory of 12 May 1879, he was called by Pope Leo XIII. elevated to cardinal. He was assigned the titular church of Santa Maria degli Angeli. He built in Kalocsa a rich doped high school of the Jesuits and knew it in 1877 with an observatory.

His herbarium and botanical library included his 1890 the most complete in Europe, also he provided a valuable work on the plants of the Bible. The German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina in 1867 appointed him to their member.
