Crater Lake

The Lake Chala (also Dschalasee ) is a crater through the center is the boundary between Tanzania and Kenya. It is located at 877 meters above sea level and is located about 8 km north of Taveta. He is deep blue and surrounded by a up to 100 m high crater rim. The lake is fed by groundwater flows coming from the Kilimanjaro and drains below ground with a throughput of about 10 million m³ / year. Also the Chala lose volume. Its level has dropped in the last 6 years by 2.4 m.

The lake is home to the endemic Oreochromis stained Barschs hunteri ( Lake Chala tilapia ).
