Taveta, Kenya

Taveta is a town in the district of Taveta in the Province of Kenya. The city has a population of 11,500 ( 1999 census ).

Geography

The town of Taveta is situated at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro on an approximately 25 times 15 km wide indentation in the direction of Kenya Tanzania, which is bounded to the north by Lake Chala and the south by the Jipe Lake.

History

The area was awarded only after 1890 the British and was therefore part of British East Africa. At the beginning of World War Taveta was briefly occupied by the German colonial force. This was one of the few territorial gains German colonial troops on enemy territory.

Economy and Transport

Taveta is a place of trade between Kenya and Tanzania with a twice weekly outdoor market takes place, which is particularly large for a city of this scale. This is supported by the connection of the border town on the line connecting the Uganda Railway Moshi- Voi.

Taveta is growing rapidly. The district has a population growth rate of 1.7 %.
