Lake Ohakuri

Ohakuri Lake is an artificial lake in the Waikato region in the North Island of New Zealand. With an area of 12 km ² it is the largest dam in the river system of the Waikato River. The Ohakuiri Dam impounds Lake to generate electricity in hydroelectric power plant Ohakuri.

The construction of the dam began in 1955 adopted a year later and was completed in 1960. The lake was filled in just 14 days in January / February 1961. Two -thirds of the geothermal area Orakei Korako were flooded and two of the world's largest geysers, the Minginui Geyser and Orakei Korako Geyser were lost.

The eastern shore of the lake forms over long distances the border to Bay of Plenty region, the northern tip of the lake lies in this region.
