Lake Rotomahana

The Lake Rotomahana is a small lake of volcanic origin in the Bay of Plenty region in the north of the North Island of New Zealand.

It is located 25 km east of Rotorua. It is located in the southwest of the dormant volcano Mount Tarawera. Along with the mountain it is in the Okataina caldera.

Lakeside was located until 1886, New Zealand's most famous natural wonders, the Pink and White Terraces. These were to sinter terraces similar to those in Pamukkale.

Lake and terraces were destroyed on 10 June 1886 a volcanic eruption seas Mount Tarawera. In place of the ancient lake, terraces and the cold-water lake Lake Rotomakiriri a 100 -meter-deep crater that was filled after a few years with water and a new, 30 m ( according to other sources 40 m) higher and 20 times larger lake formed arose. According to press reports, the buried terraces were rediscovered by chance in June 2011 under water.

The lake has rainbow trout on the lake mourning swans.
