Lance L. Smith

Lance L. Smith is a General in the U.S. Air Force. Of 10 November 2005 to 9 November 2007, he was commander of the U.S. Joint Forces Command ( JFCOM ) and thus also Supreme Allied Commander Transformation, which is responsible for the development and adaptation of the military capabilities of NATO. Smith retired in January 2008.

Training

1969 Smith graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Business Management his studies at Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Blacksburg from. The Master of Arts in the same subject he made in 1978 at the Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant. From 1981 to 1982 he attended the Air Command and Staff College at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama and two years later, the Army War College.

Military career

After he finished the military academy, he joined in 1970 as a Second Lieutenant in the service of the U.S. Air Force and was until 1972 formed as a First Lieutenant on an aircraft of the type A-1 " Skyraider " to the pilot. After he had been trained up in 1973 flight instructor, he taught until 1977 as a Captain in the 96th flight training squadron at Williams Air Force Base in Arizona. From 1977 to 1979 he was employed as a staff officer in the Air Staff Training Program of the Deputy Staff Division Head for personal matters of Defence and was promoted to Major in 1978.

After this first rod using he did from 1979 to 1981 again serve in the army, because he now had to transfer to a new type of aircraft of the USAF that make A-7 " Corsair II ". After retraining, he was employed as a pilot, flight leader and assistant operations officer in the 76th Tactical Fight squadron on the England Air Force Base in Louisiana. After he had been until 1982 at the Air Command and Staff College, he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and then transferred to the Pentagon. This time, he served as Deputy Head of Staff Department of Planning and Operations ( G3), as Chief of the Air Force component in the branches of the armed force cross- department for evaluation and initiatives and most recently as Executive Officer to the Director of Operations for the USAF. By 1989, Smith was then used as security chief and later as Assistant Deputy Commander for Operations in the 354th Tactical Combat Squadron on the Myrtle Beach Air Force Base in South Carolina. After studying at the Army War College, he was promoted to Colonel in 1989 and was from 1990 to 1992 commander of the NATO School SHAPE headquarters of NATO in Oberammergau. After that, he was first deputy commander until 1993, then commander of the 27th Combat Wing at Cannon Air Force Base in New Mexico.

From 1993 to 1995, Smith was employed as Assistant Director of operations at the headquarters of the Air Combat Command at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia. Thereafter, he was appointed Brigadier General and commanded a squadron again, this time the 4th battle squadron on the Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in North Carolina. From 1997 to 1998 he served as deputy commander of the 7th Air Force, Pacific Air Forces, as Chief of Staff of the component commands from the South Korean forces, and the USAF on the Osan Air Base in South Korea.

After this Country Using Smith in 1998 was promoted to Major General and commanded until 1999, the Air War College, was deputy commander of the Air University at Maxwell AFB in Alabama and the then to 2001 commander of the U.S. Air Force Doctrine Center at the same location.

From 2001 to 2003 he took over the post of deputy commander of United Nations Command ( Korea ) and the U.S. forces in Korea, and again in command of the 7th Air Force, Pacific Air Forces and the component command (South Korea / U.S. Air Force). In 2002 he was promoted to Lieutenant General.

Before Smith took over on 10 November 2005 the post of commander of the U.S. Joint Forces Command ( JFCOM ) and thus also the Supreme Allied Commander Transformation in Norfolk Admiral Edmund P. Giambastiani, he was from 2003 to 2005 deputy commander of U.S. Central Command on the MacDill Air Force Base in Florida. Three days before his appointment as commander of JFCOM Smith was promoted on 7 November 2005 as a general. On November 9, 2007 Smith surrendered his post at James N. Mattis and resigned in January 2008 after 38 years of service to retire.

Smith has flown more than 165 combat missions in the air in Southeast and Southwest Asia in an A- 1 " Skyraider " and an F- 15E " Strike Eagle". Overall, he has achieved over 3000 hours of flight experience in the following types: T-33, T -37, T-38 " Talon " A-1 " Skyraider " A-7 " Corsair II " A-10 " Thunderbolt II", F - 111F " Aardvark " F- 15E " Strike Eagle" and F -16 "Fighting Falcon".
