Landcare Research

The Landcare Research New Zealand Limited ( Landcare Research) is one of eight New Zealand Crown Research Institute.

The main task of Landcare Research is managing environmental research. The Institute has specialized in sustainability management of land resources, more efficient use of resources available while simultaneously protecting nature and the preservation and enhancement of biodiversity in the foreground.

The research is broadly divided into two branches. The outline Biological systems are assigned the fields of biodiversity and species conservation, biological systematics, ecosystem processes, technologies in pest ecology of wild fauna and Epidemiology, whereas the breakdown Environment & Society the areas of global change processes, Sustainability & Society, floors & landscapes and the area computer science are assumed.

As with all government institutions and companies owned by the state, even Landcare Research has a maorischsprachigen name. Manaaki Whenua means in short translates as "Keep the land."

Seat

The headquarters of the Institute is to be found in Lincoln, a few kilometers south-west of Christchurch located. Other offices and research facilities are located from north to south across the country distributed in: Auckland, Hamilton, Gisborne, Hastings, Palmerston North, Wellington, Nelson, Dunedin and Alexandra.

History

In the 1980s the New Zealand government began the research and science to restructure. In 1989, for the Ministry of Research, Science and Technology created (Ministry of Research, Science and Technology) with the aim to advise the government to prepare decision-making processes to prioritize resources allocations and introduce the performance review. But that's not enough. They wanted to create separate institutions that should do business independently and autonomously under government supervision and would then do under these conditions with its own rules and guidelines performance-related public and private sector jobs for a variety of tasks.

With the Crown Research Institutes Act 1992 ten Crown Research Institutes were established for this purpose, first, one of which still exist today, eight institutes. Landcare Research is one of them.

With the Companies Act 1993, all institutions were converted to limited liability companies ( Limited). Landcare Research is today, like all other Crown Research Institutes also, the Crown Company Unit ( controlling and advisory department ) Ministry of Finance and the Minister responsible for Research, Science and Technology assumed. Both the responsible Minister to be registered as a shareholder in each of the eight Crown Research Institutes.
