Lankaran District

Lənkəran, also Lankaran is a rayon in the south of Azerbaijan. The district encircles the city Lənkəran, but this is not part of the rayon.

Geography

The rayon has an area of 1,539 km ². To the east of the district bordering the Caspian Sea, in the west the Talyschgebirge begins. Large parts of the districts are Lenkoraner lowlands.

History

The rayon Lənkəran formed after the collapse of the Soviet Union with surrounding districts from June to August 1993, an Autonomous Republic. Then he was again an integral part of Azerbaijan.

Population

The rayon had 2009 205.300 inhabitants. These are distributed across the capital and 82 other locations. The vast majority of the population are Azerbaijanis, they represent 86.04 % of the population. Minorities in the rayon are the Talysh with 13:55 %, Russians 0.29% other races 0.12 %.

Economy

In the region of vegetables are grown and processed. There are also factories for fish and tea processing. In addition to vegetables citrus fruits and wine are grown and operated livestock and sericulture.

In Rayon is the mausoleum of Sheih Zahid and the remains of the fortress of Bellabus. In Andjin there are mineral springs. In addition, Rayon, the two national parks of Kizilagach and Gircan.
