Largentière

Largentière is a commune with 1822 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Ardèche. The inhabitants call themselves " Largentiérois ".

Geography

Largentière is located in the narrow valley of the Ligne, located about 15 km from regional center Aubenas. The municipality is part of the Regional Natural Park of Monts d' Ardèche.

History

Even the Romans built Lignetal from lead and silver, therefore, did the name of the place. The still partly visible mines were used mainly between the 9th and 15th centuries. In the 19th century Largentière developed into a characteristically industrial town with its own rail connection. In 1982, the railway was shut down.

Attractions

The Largentière castle from the 13th century, overlooks the town, there is a sanatorium housed today. Interesting is the town center with its often only a meter wide lanes.
