Larochette

Rock ( Luxembourgish fiels, French Larochette ) is a municipality in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, in the canton of Mersch. The name is derived from the rock on which the castle rock was built. With a foreign population of 63.7 percent in 2007 rock is regarded as the municipality with the highest proportion of foreigners in Luxembourg.

Geographical location

The municipality belongs to the Little Switzerland area (also known as the Müllertal ).

The municipality comprises the towns of:

  • Meysembourg

Of the 1979 residents of the community are still only 718 Luxembourg nationals, representing a share of 36.3 percent. Overall, however, in 1261 citizens live with a foreign passport in the community. With only 909 citizens or a share of almost 46 percent of the portion of Portuguese is even higher than that of Luxembourg.

History

Rock was likely inhabited since the Roman era, in the restoration of the castle, a Roman coin was found. It is believed that at the present castle site was a Roman fort.

1565 destroyed by the great fire which belongs to the castle Homburg house, it was not rebuilt. The Chriechinger house is so far the only building of the castle, which was completely restored.

On 24 June 1865, the church and 75 houses burned. For the victims, donations were collected throughout the country.

Personalities in rock

  • Victor Hugo visited the town on 16 July 1871, and painted the ruins of the castle rock.
  • General Patton had his headquarters in the Grand Hotel de la Poste in place for a short time.
  • Jean- Baptist battlements was the director and co-founder of the Philharmonic Society in rock.

Attractions

The community for probably the 11th century castle built of rock, from which a fraction is only obtained is known. The restored buildings can be visited.
