Laugarvatn
The lake Laugarvatn is located in southwest Iceland.
Geography
Just like the same place on its banks, the Laugarvatn is located on the territory of the municipality Bláskógabyggð in Laugardalur.
Its area is significantly smaller than that of the adjacent south-southeast situated Apavatn, with which it is connected across the river holaa 2.14 km ². Located northwest of the lake is the mountain Laugarvatnsfjall.
History
It is said that the bodies of the last Catholic bishop of Iceland, Jón Arason of Hólar, and his sons, after they had been murdered in the 16th century, were washed in the lake.
Traffic
The Laugarvatn is located on the Golden Circle, a popular tourist route. The shortest route from Þingvellir to geysers of Haukadalur via a gravel road through isolated areas and finally on Laugarvatn along to the north.
