Layers (digital image editing)

For plane technique in the image processing elements of the image are distributed on different levels ( engl. layers). These can be edited separately, and combine in various ways miteinder. The technique is standard in image processing.

Working with layers

Layers are like transparent ( transparent ) glass panels with images that were superimposed. The individual levels act as a transparent glass images that can be edited individually. Through the transparent areas of the individual level, the underlying layers are visible

It is placed one level, for example on a base image which is used as a background against which one can create a logo. Because the plane as a film is transparent to the viewer, the background image and the text appears as a single image.

In advertising agencies, the layer technique is often used, as can be seen on a background image put on a tiger skin or a zebra skin, for example, to the skin of a human body, which is to enable the viewer in surprise and confusion.

Also collagen are possible with the layer technique. For example, a Palm beach is chosen as the background image on placing a transparent sheet (plane) and inserts onto this plane, for example, a beach chair a. On a new layer film can then, for example, a child at play are inserted, turn on a new film, a dog, and again on another film an advertising slogan.

The layering technique is used in many ways - the principle remains the same. The lowest level in the layer stack ( Layers palette ) is called the background level and always remains unchanged. The background layer only serves as a template for a new level. A new layer from the background image so it is applied by means of copy. On this new level you can let your creativity run wild. At the end of the work, all layers can be joined to form an image. In addition to the normal image planes, there are a number of other layer types, which each take over special tasks.

Benefits of Planes

  • The individual levels can be processed independently
  • It can be any experiment to achieve the desired effect
  • Individual levels can be hidden or displayed
  • In some areas of the image colors can be changed
  • Within a screen areas can be hidden or changed

Layer types

  • Image planes contain image parts and fragments in pixel form
  • Fill layers contain a color, a gradient, or a pattern.
  • Adjustment layers are used to fine-tune the color, saturation and brightness of individual -level films
  • Text layers are used to create text elements vector-based
  • Shape layers are used to create vector-based shapes
